For a lot of our neighbors, the honest answer was "I'm not sure" — and that uncertainty is exactly what we built Mistletoe Construction to fix.
A family, a small town, and a lot of bad roofs
We're a family business, and we're proud that it's a small-town one. We're based in Riddle — 595 E Third Street, if you want to picture it — a town where you run into your customers at the grocery store and the post office. That changes how you do business. When the person whose roof you just finished is going to be standing behind you in line at Ray's next week, you don't cut corners. You can't. Your reputation isn't a review score online; it's your actual name, in your actual town.
For years, in the trades around here, we kept seeing the same two things happen to good people. Either a slick out-of-town outfit would roll through after a windstorm, scare a homeowner into a full replacement they didn't need, take the deposit, and vanish. Or a homeowner trying to save money would hire the cheapest bid, get a roof built for a dry climate instead of ours, and watch it fail years early under the moss and rain. Both stories ended the same way: a family out real money and still lying awake listening to the rain.
We figured a small, local, honest company could do better than that. So we started one.
Where the name comes from
People ask about the name. Mistletoe is one of those things that's woven into life out here — you see it up in the oaks all over Douglas County, especially in winter when the leaves are gone and it stands out green against the gray. It's a small, hardy, distinctly local thing that hangs on through the wet season. That felt about right for a family roofing company from Riddle: rooted here, built for this weather, still standing when things get harsh. We liked that the name couldn't belong to a national chain. It belongs to this valley.
What "sleep better when it rains" actually means
That line isn't marketing to us — it's the job, stated plainly. A roof has exactly one purpose, and it's not to look good in a photo. It's to stand between your family and the weather so completely that you stop thinking about it. When we say we want you to sleep better when it rains, we mean we want the roof to disappear from your worries entirely. No bucket in the hallway. No brown stain creeping across the ceiling. No lying there doing math about whether it'll make it to spring.
Getting a house to that place takes a few things we decided we'd never compromise on. We'd build roofs for our climate — real underlayment, proper flashing, moss-aware details — not the bare minimum that passes inspection in a dry state. We'd use materials we actually stand behind, which is why we became an Owens Corning contractor. And we'd tell people the truth even when it cost us a sale.
The honest-answer rule
That last one is the part we're most stubborn about. Roof repair is a service we're glad to sell — so when we get on your roof and it's got years of life left, we say so. We'll tell you to wait. We'll show you photos of what's actually up there and give you the real call: maintain it, repair this one spot, or replace it. We would genuinely rather do a small honest repair today and earn the replacement in five years than talk you into something you don't need and lose you as a neighbor forever.
