The eave is a roof's bottom edge and its busiest intersection. Several parts meet there: the fascia faces outward and carries the gutter, the soffit closes the underside, and drip edge steers water off the deck. The overhang itself is protective by design — it throws rainwater clear of the siding, windows, and foundation. (The sloped edge at a gable end is not an eave; that's the rake.)
Why eaves matter in Douglas County
Every drop of the 30-plus inches of rain a Roseburg roof sheds each year crosses the eave on its way out. It's the first part of the roof to get wet, the last to dry, and — being low and often shaded — prime moss habitat. Fir needles collect there, gutters clog there, and winter storm water backs up there. When we inspect an older roof in Riddle or Winston, the eaves are where problems show first.
When it fails, what it costs you
A clogged gutter turns the eave into a bathtub: water stands against the shingle edges, wicks into the deck, and rots the first course of decking and the fascia — the most common repair we find at tear-off. Prevention is unglamorous: keep gutters clear or fit gutter guards before needle season, and keep moss off the lower courses (our moss guide explains why the shaded eaves go green first).
Why does roof damage usually start at the eaves?
Because everything concentrates there — maximum water flow, debris, shade, and moss — while it's also the slowest part of the roof to dry. Damage at the eave then spreads uphill into decking and inward into fascia and soffit.
