In September 2020, the Archie Creek Fire tore down the North Umpqua corridor near Glide and burned over a hundred homes. If you live anywhere in Douglas County, you don't need a lecture on wildfire risk — you remember the smoke. What most homeowners don't have is a clear picture of what actually protects a house, what the rules now require, and what their insurer is quietly grading them on.
Here's the part that surprises people: most homes lost to wildfire aren't touched by the flame front at all. They're ignited by wind-blown embers, often landing well ahead of the fire. And the single largest ember target on your property is your roof. That's why roofing is where wildfire hardening starts.
What "Class A" actually means
Roof coverings are fire-rated Class A, B, or C based on standardized burn tests — Class A is the top rating, meaning the assembly resists severe fire exposure, including burning brands sitting directly on the surface. Three Class A options dominate around here:
- Fiberglass-based asphalt composition shingles. The workhorse. Nearly all quality architectural asphalt shingles sold today carry a Class A assembly rating — if your comp roof is reasonably modern, you may already have one. This is the affordable path to Class A, and at replacement time it costs nothing extra to confirm you're getting it.
- Metal roofing. Steel doesn't burn, and as part of a rated assembly over the right underlayment, metal roofs earn Class A while also shedding the needles and debris that embers love to ignite. It's the belt-and-suspenders choice for homes up the North Umpqua, in Glide, or backed up against timber.
- Concrete or clay tile. Also Class A, though less common in Douglas County — heavy, and not every structure is framed for it.
⚠ "Assembly" is the key word
The Class A rating usually belongs to the whole system — covering plus underlayment over the deck — not the top layer alone. A great shingle over the wrong underlayment may not make the rating. This is one of those details a bid should spell out; ask your roofer which rated assembly they're installing.
The rules: Oregon R327 and the county shake ban
Two layers of regulation matter locally:
- Oregon's R327 wildfire hazard code. Oregon's residential code includes wildfire hazard mitigation provisions (Section R327) that favor Class A roof assemblies and ember-resistant construction details in designated hazard areas — vents, roof edges, and the roof covering itself.
- Douglas County's Wildfire Hazard Overlay District. In the county's mapped higher-risk areas, wood shake roofs are prohibited. If you've got an old shake roof in or near the overlay district, replacement won't be shakes-for-shakes — and honestly, it shouldn't be anywhere in this county. A dry cedar roof in August is kindling with a mortgage.

How embers actually get in (and how to shut the doors)
A Class A covering solves the "ember lands on the roof surface" problem. But embers are small, wind-driven, and patient — they find the gaps. The usual entry points:

| Skylights | Debris collects against skylight curbs, and older plastic domes are vulnerable. Keep curbs clear; choose tempered-glass units at replacement. |
| Debris on the roof itself | Needle drifts in valleys and behind chimneys are ember fuel sitting on top of your Class A roof. Seasonal clearing matters as much as the material. |
Notice the theme: half of ember defense is maintenance, not materials. A Class A roof buried in dry needles has given back much of its advantage. Defensible space, briefly
We're roofers, not wildland crews, so we'll keep this short: the roof works with the ground around it. The basics that matter most — keep the first 5 feet around the house free of bark mulch, dry plants, and stacked firewood; limb up trees near the structure; don't let branches overhang the roof (they drop the very needle litter embers ignite — and feed the moss problem the rest of the year, so trimming pays twice). Oregon State Extension and your local fire district publish full defensible-space guidance worth reading.
The insurance angle: discounts, pressure, and paperwork
Since the 2020 fires, wildfire has reshaped Oregon homeowners insurance. In practice, Douglas County homeowners are seeing three things:
- Carrots. Some insurers offer discounts or preferred rates for Class A roofs and documented home-hardening.
- Sticks. In higher-risk areas, insurers increasingly ask about roof material and age at renewal — and nonrenewal pressure is real for homes with old shake roofs or visibly deferred maintenance.
- Paperwork wins. The homeowners who benefit are the ones who can prove it. Keep the contractor invoice naming the exact product line, the permit record, photos of the finished roof, and any assembly documentation — then send copies to your agent and ask specifically about wildfire-related credits.
