A downspout (or leader) is the vertical pipe connecting the gutter outlet to the ground, where an elbow and extension — or a splash block — send water away from the foundation. Gutters only collect water; downspouts are what actually get rid of it. Sizing and spacing matter: a common rule of thumb is one downspout for roughly every 30–40 feet of gutter run, with bigger 3x4-inch pipes worth it on large or steep roof planes.
Why downspouts matter in Douglas County
Do the math on our climate: 30–33 inches of rain on an average-size roof is tens of thousands of gallons a year, nearly all of it funneled through a handful of pipes between October and May. And our downspouts fight a specific local enemy — Douglas-fir needles, which mat into felt-like plugs at gutter outlets and elbows. When they fail, what it costs you
A clogged or undersized downspout backs the whole gutter up. Water then sheets over the edges and dumps along the foundation line — the leading cause of wet crawlspaces, settling walkways, and mud-splattered siding. In a freeze, an overflowing gutter becomes an ice load that pulls fasteners loose. And water standing in gutters wicks up under the roof edge at the eave unless a proper gutter apron is in place. Where should downspout water go?
At least several feet away from the foundation — via an extension, drainpipe, or splash block on grade that slopes away from the house. Straight down into the flowerbed against the wall is how crawlspace problems start.
