Where two roof planes meet at the top, field shingles from both sides stop short and a course of ridge cap shingles bridges the joint — bent over the peak and lapped one over the next like everything else on a roof. Caps finish hips the same way, and when a roof has a ridge vent, the caps ride over it as its weather cover. Quality matters here: purpose-made caps are thicker and pre-bent, while the old shortcut of cutting up three-tab shingles leaves a thin cap that cracks along the fold.

Why it matters in Douglas County
The ridge is the highest, most exposed line on the house. When storm winds sweep the Umpqua Valley, they accelerate over the peak, and the caps take the worst suction on the whole roof. Our wet-then-bone-dry cycle is the accomplice: cut three-tab caps in particular dry out and split right along the bend after years of soaking winters and baking summers. After a big blow around Roseburg or Canyonville, the shingles in the yard are usually caps.
When it fails, what it costs you
A missing cap exposes the most vulnerable seam on the roof — the open joint (or vent slot) at the peak — and gives the next gust a raw edge to keep peeling. The fix is a modest roof repair if it's caught quickly; wait, and wind and water work down into the field shingles and deck. Why did my ridge cap shingles blow off first?
Wind speeds up as it crosses the peak, creating the strongest uplift on the roof exactly where the caps sit. Add aged sealant or thin cut-from-three-tab caps, and the ridge is the natural first casualty. Purpose-made high-wind caps are a cheap upgrade at reroof time.
