A ridge vent hides in plain sight: a narrow slot is cut along the roof peak, covered by a baffled vent strip, and capped with ridge cap shingles so it reads as an ordinary ridge from the street. It's the exhaust half of a simple convection loop — warm air rises out at the peak, drawing cooler, drier air in through the soffit vents. Both halves have to work; a ridge vent with blocked soffits is a chimney with no air supply.

Why it matters in Douglas County
Attic ventilation earns its living twice a year here. All winter, household moisture drifts into the attic, and without exhaust it condenses on the cold roof deck — wet insulation, mold, and "leaks" on a roof that isn't leaking (our winter roofing guide covers the pattern). Do ridge vents let rain in?
A properly installed ridge vent doesn't. Modern vents use external baffles and internal weather filters designed to shed wind-driven rain — tested well beyond what an Umpqua Valley storm throws at them. Leaks at a ridge usually trace to damaged caps or a botched installation, not the vent concept.
